Understanding Diabetes & Its Symptoms

Hypoglycemia — Low Blood Glucose

Feeling confused, shaky or sweaty can happen to anyone. But if you’re diabetic, these symptoms could be a sign of hypoglycemia. Hypoglycemia occurs when your blood glucose level is lower than 70 mg/dL. This can happen if you don’t get enough food, get too much exercise, take too much of your diabetes medicine or drink alcohol. It’s important to follow your meal plan, exercise regimen and medicine schedule, and to check your medicine dose and blood glucose level regularly to avoid becoming hypoglycemic. Symptoms of hypoglycemia include:

  • Confusion and Difficulty Thinking Straight
  • Dizziness
  • Headaches
  • Hunger
  • Irritability
  • Shaking or Jitteriness
  • Sweating

Symptoms of hypoglycemia can develop suddenly, so it’s important to know what to do so you can act fast. Our diabetes education programs can help you manage your symptoms and live life to the fullest — starting with balancing your blood sugar levels.

Hyperglycemia — High Blood Glucose

While you have to make sure your blood sugar levels don’t dip too low, it’s also important to make sure they don’t get too high. If your blood glucose level reaches 180 mg/dL or more, you’ll experience a condition called hyperglycemia. This can happen if you eat too much, don’t get enough exercise or forget to take your diabetes medication. It can also happen if you’re under the weather or feeling stressed.

To avoid becoming hyperglycemic, remember to take care of yourself and pay attention to your body. Stick to your meal plan and regular exercise regimen, and always take your medicine. Stay alert for the symptoms of hyperglycemia, which can include:

  • Blurred Vision
  • Constant Hunger
  • Extreme Thirst
  • Fatigue
  • Frequent Trips to the Bathroom
  • Itchy Skin

If you need help controlling your blood sugar levels, come to us. With our diabetes education tools, you can learn how to manage your diabetes, avoid hyperglycemia, and embrace a full and active life.

The food you eat can fuel your body — or slow it down. But making healthy food choices doesn’t have to mean giving up your favorite treats entirely. We focus on a technique called mindful eating that allows you to indulge in the occasional treat, like sharing a dessert with your partner, while still effectively managing your weight and blood glucose.

With guidance from our registered dietitians, you’ll learn how to make healthier choices when dining out, the grocery store and every snack in between. Enjoy food that tastes great and nourishes your body at the same time.

Feel in control. Working with a compassionate behavioral specialist, you’ll develop habits that support your wellness so you can live a life of physical, emotional and spiritual balance. From knowing when and where to find help if you need it to learning strategies to manage challenges, we’ll help you establish lifestyle choices that build your resilience and boost your confidence.
